Invitation Etiquette

While it may seem silly there is certain etiquette when it comes to invitations. Regardless of whether you are sending out birthday invitations or a wedding invitation there some general rules you should follow. Here are a few tips for making sure your invitations are properly formatted.

What to Include – Every invitation should have the following information:

Purpose of the invite – What is the occasion – a birthday, a wedding, a Christmas party.
Name of the Honoree – Name of the birthday boy or girl. If you were sending graduation invitations it would be the name of the person graduating.
Date and Time – Don’t forget to include the date and time.
Place – Where is the party being held?
Map or Directions – It’s a good idea to give directions to the party if your guests are not all familiar with the location.

When writing up your invitations, it’s important to remember that all invitations are written in the third person. Use your first name and in more formal situations use your last name. As an example, Bob and Sue Horkheimer wish to invite you to their annual 4th of July BBQ. Finally, get your invitations in the mail early, expert’s recommend sending them out at least 8 weeks in advance. This gives people time to respond as well as get it on their calendar.
