In the United States there are patent lawyers and patent agents. Patent lawyers are attorneys at law. Patent agents are not attorneys at law. Both can prepare an application. Patent agents are not permitted to conduct litigation in court or perform or practice any type of law. Patent agents cannot provide legal services of any kind. Sometimes a patent agent is a patent attorney in training or waiting. Hiring a lawyer may mean the difference in getting your patent out to the world.
